Violent extremist carried out terrorist attack in New Zealand shopping centre - Jacinda Arden

A "violent extremist" carried out a terrorist attack in an Auckland shopping centre, New Zealand's prime minister has said.

Police shot and killed a man on Friday after he stabbed and wounded at least five people at a shopping mall in the city.

The man, who was known to authorities and had been residing in the country since October 2011, was a Sri Lankan national.

Speaking this morning, Jacinda Ardern said: "What happened today was despicable, it was hateful, it was wrong."
