Deeply personal and sensitive matter Pangai out of Penrith clash

Tevita Pangai jnr has returned home to Brisbane to be with his partner and deal with a “deeply personal and sensitive matter”.

The back-rower was set to make his debut for the Panthers on Saturday night against the Sydney Roosters after signing a short-term deal for the final five games of the regular season and finals.

But Penrith confirmed Pangai had rushed home for personal reasons.

“Tevita and his partner Anna are currently dealing with a deeply personal and sensitive matter, and the Panthers are providing Tevita and Anna with all the necessary support,” the club said.

Pangai, 25, spoke excitedly about his first game for the Panthers during the week. He stopped via Penrith after leaving Brisbane before joining Canterbury next year.

“I’ve come here to work with certain players and coaches in Ivan [Cleary] and Cameron Ciraldo and Peter Wallace to work on my defence, get all of those little things right, the little habits right, that will take me to the next level,” he said. “I’m really excited.”

It remains unclear if Pangai will be available the following week when Penrith play St George Illawarra.
