This minor premiership battle has certainly turned out to be a fizzer.
Oliver finally ends Geelong’s streak of nine consecutive goals to cut the margin back to 38 points halfway through the third quarter, 4.6.30 to 11.2.68.
Hawkins now has a game-high four goals.

But for all their possession, aggression, craft and guile they couldn’t put the Giants away, and after Toby Greene took a contested mark late in the quarter and goaled, GWS had closed the gap to one point at the interval, leaving them well-placed to take control of their own finals destiny.

In the space of 10 minutes, Geelong has shown why they’re one of the most devastating teams in the competition, piling on five goals to open up a 39-point buffer at the break.
It was Selwood and Dangerfield who lifted the Cats onto their shoulders, while the Dees simply couldn’t get their hands onto the footy.
They’ve had their fair share of inside-50s, the Dees, but need to be more efficient going forward and their forwards need to hold onto their marks and take their opportunities.
Looking forward to a big second half from Petracca and Pickett, who are capable of bringing their side back into the contest.

An astonishing second quarter ends with Melbourne’s minor premiership hopes in turmoil.
The Cats finish the first half with the last eight goals against the best defence in the competition, which is just extraordinary when you think about it.
It was such a tight game for over a quarter, and then all of a sudden the Cats flicked the switch in a devastating 10-minute period which saw them dominate the centre bounces.
The Cats are well on top in disposals 204-176, marks 53-37 and free kicks 13-8, and despite having fewer inside 50s (27-30), they’ve had more scoring shots 12-8 and, more importantly, many more goals 10-3.

All of a sudden the Cats are out to a 28-point lead with 5:07 left in the first half on the back of six unanswered goals, 8.2.50 to 3.4.22.
Hawkins boots another one, to take his tally to three, before Dangerfield runs to 50m out and unleashes a long bomb, and then Close also gets in on the action.
Melbourne’s vaunted defence is struggling with the Cats’ tactic of running at them with effective use of handballs.
