  • Newly-crowed Wimbledon champion Ash Barty made a shaky start to her first Olympics singles campaign, dropping two early breaks to Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Barty trails 4-1 in the first set against Sorribes Tormo, who is ranked number 48 in the world and has never before crossed paths with the Australia.

The world number one has struggled to find her rhythm on serve in front of an empty centre court in Tokyo and was broken twice in a row by the Spaniard.

Barty has also made 15 unforced errors to five and is now facing an uphill battle against Sorribes Tormo, who is now on serve.

It’s the host nation’s second gold medal.

Australia’s quad sculls women have dominated their cut throat repechage to win confidently and go through to the final most likely on Tuesday.

The Australians asserted themselves on the field leading from start to finish to win in 6:36.67 from the Italians and New Zealanders.

Monday’s program has been cleared out with all racing brought into Saturday and Sunday’s schedule in anticipation of the impact of a typhoon off Japan.

There remains a chance that the schedule could yet be changed once more with racing pushed back again into Tuesday due to expected wild weather.

Of course that won’t really trouble the crowds with tickets to attend - there aren’t any.

They can pretty much fiddle around with the schedule all they like without worrying about spectators.

The athletes on the other hand now potentially have two days to train and wait before racing again.

Unfortunately, race favourite Elijah Winnington (3:45.20) did not finish on the podium. He wilted badly in the final 200m to finish 7th.

And the two Australians are in the top three.

Jack McLoughlin turned in first, Elijah Winnington in third.
